Wizards Win a Non-League Battle Against
the Middies
The
Washingtonville varsity football team gained a third consecutive win this past
Saturday against Middletown
bringing their record to 3-4 overall.
The offense and defense played with intensity to close game with 19-6
win. The team’s upcoming game against Warwick
this Friday is a DIV
AA-2 battle for a spot in the playoffs.
The Wizard’s offense had a tough
start after Middletown
recovered a fumble on the first drive. Regardless, the defense came out and
took immediate control of the field and recovered a fumble on Middletown’s 7 yard line. Gaining the ball
back helped senior captain Kevin Reilly scored a touchdown to give the Wizards
an early 6-0 lead. Middletown’s attempts to come back from their
early defeat were cut short. Big stops
by Brian Hlavac and Keenan Bailey prevented them from
moving forward. The Wizards quickly gained the ball back after each Middletown drive. Senior captains Bobby Tansey
and Kevin Reilly helped to run the ball up the field. With efforts from the
Wizard offensive line Tansey gained a 13 yard
touchdown run giving the Wizards a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter.
As Middletown tried to come back, Wizard defense
pummeled their efforts. Linebacker Eric
Kowalski stopped a presumable touchdown after a long run by Middletown.
The Middies went on to attempt a fake punt but were stopped by Brian Hlavac at the Wizard’s 49 yard line. Whenever the Wizard
offense took over they started each new series strong. Runs from Bobby Tansey and John DeCourcey’s 9
yard pass pulled the Wizards deeper into Middie
territory. With four minutes left in the
half Kyle Oliver caught a 21 yard touchdown pass from DeCourcey
giving the Wizards to a 19-0 lead.
At the start of the second half
defensive players Eric Kowalski, Keen Bailey and Chris Fernandez made strong
attempts to keep the Middies back as they moved up the field. The Wizard
defensive efforts to prevent Middletown
from scoring fell short when an 8 yard touchdown pass by Jon Villafane was successful.
The Middies went for a two point conversion but were stopped by Chris
Fernandez making the score 19-6. Middletown
attempted to get the game back but Brian Hlavac and
Eric Kawolski continued to run the defense. Big plays
from the Wizards’ D and an interception from Nick Martucci
prevented any offensive attempts by Middletown
the remainder of the game.
